Four meadow events in Winchester, 23 to 25 September: scything hay on Magdalen Hill Down, then sowing local seed at Chilcomb, Rack Hill and Gordon Avenue.
People in Winchester can spend part of next week cutting hay with scythes and sowing wildflower seed on four local green spaces. The countryside charity CPRE Hampshire has put on four meadow events between Wednesday 23 and Friday 25 September, as part of Winchester Green Week.
They belong to the charity’s Magnificent Meadows project. Milly Sell, who handles press for CPRE Hampshire, told us the events went live today. She describes them as “Winchester based meadow enhancement events”.
The four events
Wednesday 23 September, 9am to 12.30pm: Magdalen Hill Down. Green hay harvesting with scythes, and seed collecting. Book the Magdalen Hill Down session.
Wednesday 23 September, 1pm to 3pm: Chilcomb Rec. Heritage seed gathering and oversowing. Book the Chilcomb Rec session.
Thursday 24 September, 6pm to 7pm: Rack Hill. Oversowing with locally gathered heritage seed. Book the Rack Hill session.
Friday 25 September, 4pm to 5pm: Gordon Avenue play area wildflower meadow. Oversowing with locally gathered seed. Book the Gordon Avenue session.
Seed from the city’s own meadows
The seed collecting comes first, on Magdalen Hill Down on the Wednesday morning. The three sessions after it are all oversowing. At Rack Hill the charity lists “locally gathered heritage seed”, and at the Gordon Avenue play area “locally gathered seed”.
What it means for you
Each event is booked on its own. “If you are interested in going along to any of these events please book via our website where there are individual booking links for each event,” Milly Sell said.
The full details for each session are on the CPRE Hampshire events page. If you only have an hour, the Thursday evening at Rack Hill and the Friday afternoon at Gordon Avenue are the shortest sessions.
These meadow sessions come days after CPRE Hampshire’s On the Edge walk on the city’s southern edge, when 15 people walked the Dongas, St Catherine’s Hill and Cowslip Field. For more to do in town, see our things to do in Winchester page.
